Emergency Appeal:
Xenophobic Violence Against Asylum Seekers in Israel
HIAS has been helping with the arrival, absorption, and integration of Olim since the establishment of the state of Israel. Today, HIAS continues this work by promoting and facilitating aliyah and supporting Olim through academic scholarships. HIAS also is working closely with the Israeli government to establish an Israeli asylum system.
Since April 2012, a wave of xenophobia, fear, and violence targeting African migrants has washed over Israel. The country’s deficient asylum system—combined with popular misconceptions about migrant communities and xenophobic rhetoric from politicians—has laid the foundation for much of this violence. In response, HIAS quickly mobilized to educate Jewish communities about this situation and raise Israeli public awareness about asylum issues, and now is training and building a corps of attorneys to provide pro bono legal representation for asylum-seekers in Israel.
